How To Make A DIY Off Grid Solar Ice Maker-Perfect For Those Times When The Power Goes Out

Now you can make ice for those times when your power goes out, or for off grid living, or you just want to save money on your electric bill.  This solar-powered ice maker is fast, and easy to set up, and you’ll be making ice in no time flat. Once you have the parts all you really need to do is plug it in.

You can get all the items you need for this DIY solar ice maker project from stores near you, or online. This solar ice maker can be run via two 45 Watt ‘ 3-panel sets’ from Harbor Freight Tools (Google it). Or as an optional purchase a 90 Watt or more solar panel. These panels will also run a small chest freezer.

You will need to use a 1000 Watt inverter so the ice maker will turn on. It needs 800 watts for 1/10 of a second to turn on, and after that runs on 90 watts per hour.

  • Bug-n-out

    The solar ice maker will be much the same as the solar AC unit. With the ice maker you will need a low power countertop ice maker. I have seen these on for as low as $60-$70. You will need a solar panel, regulator, related cords and of course the water to turn into ice.

    Set up solar panel in sun, ensure the panels you use have enough wattage to power the ice maker so you may need several panels. Harbor freight sells these and the regulator as a package and they are cheap but the quality is also low Chinese quality units.

    Wire the panels into the regulator (seen in back of above photo with green light on it… then just plug the ice maker into the regulator and you are ready to make ice. Then just follow the directions of your particular ice maker to add the water and make ice.

    Keep in mind you will need enough sunlight to make ice so make it during the day! You can then also use the ice in the off-grid AC unit that uses fans, a 5 gallon bucket and your fresh ice to keep your room cool during a grid-down situation.

    You can also rig up a water generator that will pull water from the air to provide you and your family critical water that is both clean enough to drink and cold. If you want to learn about this just message me!

        Look up dehumidifiers, it is a similar concept to the ice maker in that it drops the temps of the air instead of water in order to condense water out of the air. Another low energy method involves piping air thru buried hoses preferably conductive like metal but could be any type which also lowers the temps of the air causing condensate to form. Look up the Air Drop I think it was out of Australia as this was the basis behind it.

    Most ice makers use 240 Watts might make it run better with a water cooling on the condenser water conducts heat twice as good as air.very small pump and some water?

    I really hate batteries. And I love ice. What about running direct from the solar panel production, maybe with a rheostat to regulate current to the machine? Or even to an inverter? Help me figure out how to run it without the batteries please.
